Black Sun Rising - By C.S. Friedman

This is the first book in C.S. Friedman's Coldfire trilogy. It was one of the first large novels I ever read. Basically I picked it up because it had a very nice cover, which I know doesn't tell a lot about the book, but I wasn't a gigantic reader back then.

Well, first of all, it is a novel in the fantasy genre. The magic system used is very unique and quite original. It deals with a human civilization on a faraway world in which technology becomes nearly useless due to the Fae. The Fae are living creatures native to the planet Erna. They can manifest into human dreams, or more commonly, their worst nightmares. Due to them technology such as guns and explosives are very unpredictable in how they function.

Human adepts have managed to be able to control this power to an extent for their own purposes in warding buildings and other such things. Or like the mysterious Hunter, have mastered its use for less pleasant purposes.

The main character in this novel is the warrior priest Damion Kilcannon Vryce, an interesting character overall. This isn't the best book I've read, but it is interesting.
